Advice for DoxyPEP
DoxyPEP is primarily used to reduce the risk of chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhoea. If these infections do occur, they may cause the following symptoms:
- Chlamydia: Often asymptomatic, but may cause painful urination, unusual discharge, lower abdominal pain, and testicular discomfort in men.
- Syphilis: Develops in stages:
- Primary stage – A painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection.
- Secondary stage – Rashes on the palms and soles, flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes.
- Latent and tertiary stages – If untreated, syphilis can damage the brain, nerves, heart, and other organs.
- Gonorrhoea: Symptoms include burning sensation when urinating, yellow or green discharge, sore throat (if oral gonorrhoea is present), and testicular pain.
Many people with these infections do not experience symptoms, which is why regular STI testing is crucial.
