Could the Wegovy® Pill Be Right for You? A Guide to the New Injection-Free GLP-1 Option

Weight loss treatment in the UK is changing. For years, the conversation around GLP-1 medication has centred on injections. That is no longer the only option. A once-daily pill is now available, and it is opening up treatment to people who never thought it was for them.

If you have been curious about GLP-1 treatment but the idea of injections has held you back, now is the time to find out what is possible.

What is the Wegovy® pill?

Wegovy® (semaglutide) is now available as a once-daily oral tablet. It contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy® injection, semaglutide, and works by supporting your body's natural appetite regulation system. Your body already produces a hormone called GLP-1 that helps control hunger. Wegovy® works in the same way, helping you feel less hungry, eat less, and make progress towards your weight goals.

It is a prescription-only medication suitable for adults living with obesity, or adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Like any treatment, it works best alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

What does the evidence say?

The clinical results are compelling. In a 64-week medical study of 307 adults, those taking the Wegovy® pill alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity lost on average 14% of their starting body weight. That is roughly 33 pounds based on the average starting weight in the study. Those taking a placebo lost around 2.4% by comparison. Around 76% of adults taking the pill achieved at least 5% weight loss, and 28% lost 20% or more of their body weight. (Source: www.wegovy.com/obesity/is-wegovy-right-for-me/wegovy-pill-results.html)

Participants also experienced improvements in waist size, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, though it is important to note the pill is not currently approved to treat those conditions specifically.

Results will vary from person to person. A clinician can help you understand what is realistic for you.

Pill or injection: which is right for you?

Both formats contain the same active ingredient, but they work differently in practice and the right choice depends on your lifestyle, your preferences, and your health history.

The pill is taken once daily, at a consistent time, before food. The injection is taken once weekly. Neither is better in an absolute sense. What matters is which one you will actually commit to and maintain over time.

It is worth knowing that the pill comes with specific requirements around timing and food that need to be factored into your daily routine. What sounds simple in theory needs to genuinely fit your life in practice. If you are someone who travels frequently, dislikes injections, or finds a daily habit easier to maintain than a weekly one, the pill could be a strong fit. If you are already doing well on the injection, switching may not be the right move without clinical guidance.

The most important thing is making an informed decision that works for you, not just in the short term, but over the course of your whole treatment journey.

Who is the pill best suited to?

The pill has the potential to bring GLP-1 treatment to people who have previously ruled it out. Needle aversion is a real and valid reason to have avoided injectable medication, and a tablet removes that barrier entirely.

Beyond that, the pill suits people who want a discreet, straightforward daily routine. No injections, no refrigeration concerns, no complicated storage when travelling. Just a tablet, taken consistently, as part of your day.

That said, every treatment decision should be made with clinical support. A clinician will assess your individual circumstances and help you decide which format gives you the best chance of long-term success.

Taking control of how you feel about treatment

Stigma around obesity and its treatment is real, and it stops too many people from getting the help they deserve. Obesity is not a personal failing. It is a chronic medical condition influenced by biology, hormones, genetics, and environment. Treating it is not a shortcut. It is the right thing to do.

For many patients, a tablet feels more private and less clinical than an injection. If that makes it easier to start treatment, stay on treatment, and talk about treatment openly, that is a genuinely good thing. You deserve access to effective care on your own terms.

Important safety information

Wegovy® is a prescription-only medication. Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation, particularly in the early stages of treatment. These often ease as your body adjusts.

Wegovy® is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2), or by anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide. Always discuss your full medical history with a clinician before starting treatment.
